September 2, 2024 - Mark 1-2

“The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God” (1:1).  Or, the beginning of the good news about Jesus Christ.  And, indeed, it is good news!  It is good news that had been planned from the beginning of time.  The saints of old heard and believed.  They waited and watched.  So many believed the promises without seeing them fully manifested in their lifetimes, yet because of their belief they were accounted as righteous.  And now . . . and now, we get to, not look forward, but back upon the life and ministry of Jesus!  We have the promises fulfilled and the Scriptures that tell us the story!

John the Baptist looked forward to his coming, but also was able to usher him into the public eye through his preaching.  Jesus was tempted but without sin.  He began his ministry by preaching repentance and the necessity of believing the gospel.  He called his disciples.  He healed and cast out demons.  “And at once his fame spread everywhere throughout all the surrounding region of Galilee” (1:28).  The people had waited so long, and now there was such excitement at his appearing.

In 1:37, Mark reports the disciples saying to Jesus:  “Everyone is looking for you.”  Well, of course!  They had waited so long.  Word was getting out.  He’s here!  And so, he continued to heal and to preach and to call his disciples.  He also confronted the prevailing religious traditions and leaders, who fought against him so.  And he explained to them that his disciples were not fasting because they were too busy rejoicing in his presence (2:18-22).  They had waited so long.  But the bridegroom was now with them!  A time for rejoicing and celebration!

Come, thou long expected Jesus,

born to set thy people free;

from our fears and sins release us,

let us find our rest in thee.

Israel's strength and consolation,

hope of all the earth thou art;

dear desire of every nation,

joy of every longing heart.   -- Charles Wesley (1744)
