Paul began his epistle to the Philippians with words of grace, peace, thanksgiving, and joy. Here, in chapter 3, he writes, “Finally, my brothers and sisters, rejoice in the Lord! To write this again is no trouble to me” (3:1). And what is the wellspring of that rejoicing? Paul testifies, “[I am] found in him, not because I have my own righteousness derived from the law, but because I have the righteousness that comes by way of Christ’s faithfulness– a righteousness from God that is in fact based on Christ's faithfulness” (3:9). And, then, Paul adds one of those texts we come back to time and time again: “Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I say, rejoice! Let everyone see your gentleness. The Lord is near! Do not be anxious about anything. Instead, in every situation, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, tell your requests to God. And the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus” ( 4:4-7). What peace and joy are ours, all because of Christ!
Oh the joy, the bliss divine
Saviour, blessed Saviour,
Thus to know and call Thee mine
Saviour, blessed Savior.
Not a sorrow, not a care
Thou dost all my burdens bear,
While Thy constant love I share,
Saviour, blessed Saviour. –Fanny Crosby, 1855
