Psalms, this morning, that seem very appropriate for the place and the time. Here in Indonesia, we have seen many gods, and if one travels around the world, he will see even more. But the psalmist declares, “There is none like you among the gods, O Lord, nor are there any works like yours. All the nations you have made shall come and worship before you, O Lord, and shall glorify your name. For you are great and do wondrous things; you alone are God” (86:8-10). Not yet, but one day, all the peoples, all the nations will acknowledge that the Lord alone is God and will come and worship him.
Not only all the nations, but every generation will know the Lord and his love: “I will sing of the steadfast love of the Lord, forever; with my mouth I will make known your faithfulness to all generations. For I said, ‘Steadfast love will be built up forever; in the heavens you will establish your faithfulness’” (89:1-2). Can anyone think of a New Testament confirmation of these things? How about Philippians 2:9-11 – “God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
The ends of all the earth shall hear
and turn unto the Lord in fear;
all kindreds of the earth shall own
and worship him as God alone.
All earth to him her homage brings,
the Lord of lords, the King of kings. –Psalter (1912)
