March 10, 2025 - Judges 9-10

Writer's picture: George MartinGeorge Martin

Abimelech deceived his clan by speaking deceptive words to them along with his mother’s relatives who “spoke all these words on his behalf in the ears of all the leaders of Shechem, and their hearts inclined to follow Abimelech, for they said, “’He is our brother’” (9:3).  And so, his family “gave him seventy pieces of silver out of the house of Baal-berith with which Abimelech hired worthless and reckless fellows, who followed him.  And he went to his father’s house at Ophrah and killed his brothers the sons of Jerubbaal, seventy men, on one stone. But Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left, for he hid himself” (9:4-6).  Abimelech ultimately fell but the story reminds us of the need for discernment in choosing those who would lead us.  Of course, our great hope as believers is found in our Head, the One whom  God raised “from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come.   And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all” (Ephesians 1:20-23).

Jesus, the Savior, reigns,

The God of truth and love;

When He has purged our stains,

He took his seat above;

Lift up your heart,

Lift up your voice!

Rejoice, again I say, rejoice!   -- Charles Wesley (1744)
