Psalm 119. I think it is good practice to read this psalm very slowly, reflecting on the wonderful Word of God.
When will we be considered blameless? When we walk in the law of the Lord. (1)
“I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you” (11). Thomas Brooks, in Precious Remedies Against Satan’s Devices, notes this as one of the most important remedies, that is, keeping God’s Word before us.
“I will meditate on your precepts” (15). Thomas Brooks, again: “Remember, it is not hasty reading, but serious meditating upon holy and heavenly truths, that make them prove sweet and profitable to the soul. It is not the bee’s touching of the flower that gathers honey, but her abiding for a time upon the flower that draws out the sweet.”
“I am a companion of all who fear you, of those who keep your precepts” (63). The fellowship of brothers and sisters in Christ is the sweetest of all.
“I have more understanding than all my teachers, for your testimonies are my meditation” (99). If we would be truly wise, we will learn God’s Word and meditate upon it.
“Keep steady my steps according to your promise, and let no iniquity get dominion over me” (133). If we are to walk in the right way, we must always be resting in the Lord’s power and grace.
“Many are my persecutors and my adversaries, but I do not swerve from your testimonies” (157). Even when everyone else rejects the Lord and his Word, we must keep to our God and his Word.
“Great peace have those who love your law; nothing can make them stumble” (165). What peace is found in the Word of God!
I think I will leave it at that, today.
