The man who fears the Lord. Consider his character and actions (from Psalm 112), how firm he is in his commitment to the Lord and to righteousness! He delights in the Lord’s commandments, they are like honey to him (Psalm 119). Riches, especially, the riches of righteousness are his. He is gracious, merciful, and righteous. He is generous with his riches. He treats others with justice. He is firm. He trusts in the Lord. He is not afraid because of his trust in the Lord. And because of these things, “He will be remembered forever” (6), “His righteousness endures forever; his horn is exalted in honor” (9). Oh, to be remembered in this way by those who come after us!
How blest are those who fear the Lord
and greatly love God’s holy will.
Their children share their great reward,
and blessings all their days shall fill.
The people who befriend the weak
in justice shall their cause maintain.
True peace shall their whole life attend,
and long their memory shall remain.
By evil tidings not dismayed,
the righteous trust in God alone.
Their heart is steadfast, unafraid,
for they shall see their foes o’erthrown. –Anonymous (1912)
