The Lord called Moses and spoke to him from the tent of meeting, saying, ‘Speak to the people of Israel and say to them, When any one of you brings an offering to the Lord, you shall bring your offering of livestock from the herd or from the flock” (1:1-2). How many times we have rehearsed the fact that God has spoken! He has spoken in his Word. How terrible it would be if he did not speak! In fact, such a possibility was spoken of by the prophet Amos as a terrible warning:
“’Behold, the days are coming,’ declares the Lord God,
‘when I will send a famine on the land—
not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water,
but of hearing the words of the Lord.
They shall wander from sea to sea,
and from north to east;
they shall run to and fro, to seek the word of the Lord,
but they shall not find it’” (Amos 8:11-12).
In Leviticus, God has spoken and told the people of Israel how they must live in order to remain in covenant relationship with him. After all their rebellious ways, God could have gone silent but he did not. He continued to speak, and he continued to reach out. How patient and merciful is our God!
Word of God speak
Would you pour down like rain
Washing my eyes to see
Your majesty
To be still and know
That you're in this place
Please let me stay and rest
In your holiness
Word of God speak. --Bart Millard and Pete Kipley (Mercy Me, 2002)
