At Peor, the people were sinning with the women of Peor and worshiping Baal, and God’s wrath was imminent. However, Phineas interceded by killing some of the perpetrators with a favorable outcome: “And the Lord said to Moses, ‘Phinehas the son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, has turned back my wrath from the people of Israel, in that he was jealous with my jealousy among them, so that I did not consume the people of Israel in my jealousy’” (25:10-11). Additional commandments, a census, Joshua chosen as Moses’ replacement – getting the people ready to enter the promised land. A Moses, a Joshua, a Phinehas: Always, God will have his man to lead. Sometimes, only a single person will stand up for what is right but, with God on his side that is enough. History has proved this true time and time again.
Who is on the Lord’s side? Who will serve the King?
Who will be His helpers, other lives to bring?
Who will leave the world’s side? Who will face the foe?
Who is on the Lord’s side? Who for Him will go?
By Thy call of mercy, by Thy grace divine,
We are on the Lord’s side—Savior, we are Thine!
Not for weight of glory, nor for crown and palm,
Enter we the army, raise the warrior psalm;
But for love that claimeth lives for whom He died:
He whom Jesus saveth marches on His side.
By Thy love constraining, by Thy grace divine,
We are on the Lord’s side—Savior, we are Thine! -- Frances R. Havergal (1877)
