In these chapters we get a quick succession of kings both in Judah and Israel. We keep on getting comparisons with those who come before. In Israel it is always the same they continued in the ways of those who proceeded them. We know from history that some of these kings were quite powerful such as Omri but that is not what the author of kings cares about. He cares about one thing faithfulness. The kings of Israel might have been great military leaders but they failed because they were unfaithful. All to often our current world care about fame and power and money. Sadly, this is true even in the church. You might be tempted to want to do big things for God and reach hundreds of thousands of people for Christ. God never asks you to do extraordinary things he asks you to be faithful. Sometimes faithfulness means he does extraordinary things through you, other times it might mean toiling planting seeds and never seeing any fruit. Faithfulness is not flashy but it is pleasing God. May we have the eyes of the author of Kings who does not look at success numbers game but on how faithful we were to our Lord.
